Public Health in Colombia, Summer 2019
This four-week course, “The Colombian Healthcare System and Public Health in Colombia” will guide students and professionals within the field of Public Health, Global Health, Community Health, Healthcare Management and other interested disciplines, through an exploration of public health in Colombia from an international, inter- disciplinary and inter-cultural perspective.
Students will have a unique opportunity to explore the post-conflict socio-political situation in Colombia, the Colombian healthcare system, and the public health challenges that the country faces both in general and in relation to the post-conflict environment. Students will also learn how population dynamics have affected health services’ delivery and public health within the framework of the Colombian General Health- related Social Security System (SGSSS).
Taught in English, the academic program will be split between morning lectures from the Institute of Public Health’s impressive faculty, as well as guest lectures from PUJ faculty in medicine, psychology, political science and other social science disciplines, who have professional expertise in each particular topic. The afternoons include site visits to organizations that participate in or support public health activities in Colombia. These site visits can be used to launch research projects and develop a network of contacts in the Public Health field in Bogota.
The program is arranged as a package from Monday, June 10th– Friday, July 5th, 2019 that includes supervised bed and breakfast accommodation (a private room in modern university halls of residence), an airport transfer on arrival in Bogota, and a busy supplementary calendar of social activities and excursions at evenings and weekends to enable students to explore Colombia and its culture during their stay.
